This Could Save a Life
Suicide is preventable, but only if we recognize the signs and know how to respond. Every year, over 700,000 people die by suicide worldwide, but for every death, there are 20 attempts -- meaning millions need support right now.
Warning Signs
- Talking about wanting to die or being a burden
- Looking for ways to end their life
- Giving away possessions
- Increased substance use
- Withdrawal from friends and activities
- Extreme mood swings
- Expressing hopelessness about the future
- Sleeping too much or too little
How to Help
- Ask directly: "Are you thinking about suicide?" Direct questions do not plant ideas -- they open doors
- Listen without judgment: Let them talk. Do not argue or minimize
- Stay with them: Do not leave someone at immediate risk alone
- Remove means: Help remove access to weapons, medications, or other means
- Connect to help: Call crisis services together
